Inspired by the culinary excesses of Regency Brighton, ‘The Illustrated Recipe’ is a group show of artworks created to coincide with the Brighton Festival this May. In the early 19th century the Prince Regent, later George IV, hosted extraordinary banquets at the Royal Pavilion in Brighton which were created by Marie-Antoine Carême (1784-1833), who is considered the first celebrity chef and exponent of ‘grande cuisine’. Before the fall of Napoleon, Carême had gained fame in Paris for his ‘pieces montées’, elaborate constructions used as centrepieces, which were sometimes several feet high, entirely out of foodstuffs such as sugar, marzipan, and pastry and based on temples, pyramids, and ancient ruins.

The exhibition features prints by the fashion designer and illustrator Sarah Arnett exploring the aesthetic of excess, a denim collage portrait of the Prince Regent and still lives of dead hares by Ian Berry, paper collages by Ed Kluz inspired by the temple-like desserts, witty takes on the boar’s head and other dishes crocheted in wool by Kate Jenkins, and paintings of still lifes with a Regency twist by Kirsty Wither. At least 6 tiny new fox cubs under the studio-all scrabbling about today. Will take photos when I can. Eyes open but very brown with tiny tails. Subject matter definitely close to home!
